You won't be astounded when you first turn on Disney Plus. Disney Plus is a bland Netflix clone, in contrast to the likes of Kayo Sports, which debuted with a variety of distinctive and progressive features, and even Apple TV+, which had that distinct, Apple feel. Not that there is anything wrong with it, but it would have been wonderful to see some innovation.
Line after line of horizontal EPGs divided into categories and "trending search" filters are occasionally broken up by featured content boxes. You can either choose from the key Disney pillars—Disney, Star Wars, Marvel, National Geographic, Pixar, and Star—or leap right into Kids mode. Everything is available for offline use via download.
When it comes to features, Disney actually checks off practically all of the expected boxes. In addition to offline viewing, several movies and TV shows support 4K, Dolby Atmos, and Dolby Vision. This naturally applies to more current works, but the 4K Disney Plus list also included some surprises from the past, such Star Wars.
The primary features are completed with family sharing for up to seven accounts and four concurrent streams. The absence of a "continue watching" service was the only obvious flaw at debut. It was a major oversight, but Disney finally included it along with two other improvements. The GroupWatch feature was also a welcome addition.
Disney Plus cost and worth
Disney Plus particularly stands out against Netflix's 4K premium plan, which costs $22.99 per month, because it delivers everything for just $11.99 a month. Additionally, it outperforms Stan ($19/month) and BINGE ($18/month for 4 streams, no 4K). In terms of content, Disney Plus is also superior to Apple TV+, which costs $7.99 per month. Only Prime Video, which costs $6.99 per month, has a comparable selection at a lower cost.
Disney Plus is available for $119.99 a year, thereby reducing the price down to $10 per month, if you're sure you'll love the service.
Additionally deserving of praise is the variety of supported devices. It is comprehensive and includes everything from mobile devices to gaming consoles, including smart TVs, PCs and Macs, iOS, Android, Windows 10 and 11, Apple TV, Android TV, Telstra TV, Amazon Fire, Chromecast, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S. (LG, Samsung, Panasonic, Hisense). Good work.
Note: In Australia, Disney Plus was initially available for $8.99 per month and $89.99 per year. It increased on February 23, 2021, when the Star channel debuted.
Review of Disney Plus content
Disney Plus feels like the first real Netflix rival in the streaming TV market due to its scale and global significance.
Initially, this was not the case. Whereas Netflix had established itself as the go-to source for sophisticated, if not adult-focused, original material, Disney was a family-oriented endeavor that mainly relied on past accomplishments. With just enough cross-demographic content to keep parents and fanboys (or girls) connected, it was a utopia for kids.
Fair enough, but Disney Plus only had one noteworthy launch exclusive. The Mandalorian, a very fine live-action Star Wars series, was a nice one. It's a must-see for any Star Wars fan and a good starting point for those who have avoided Wookiees for the past 40 years.
Other launch exclusives included movies like Lady and the Tramp and Noelle, documentaries like Marvel Hero Project, comedies like High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, and a Jeff Goldblum mystery, but they didn't add any urgency.
That has substantially changed through 2020, especially around 2021. Every month, new, high-profile exclusive films like Soul, Luca, Hamilton, and The One and Only Ivan as well as TV shows and documentaries are introduced. Not to mention easier access to older media, including the debut of popular TV shows like The Simpsons and iconic movies like Avatar and the eight X-Men movies.
The Book of Boba Fett debuted in late 2021, while kid-friendly programs like Muppets Now kept young viewers riveted to the screen. Marvel fans alone received 5 new TV series in 2021.
However, the advent of the Star channel has mostly allayed any residual concerns about the Disney Plus content. It made Disney Plus more than simply a family-focused streaming service when it launched on February 23, 2021; it now has hundreds of films and TV episodes aimed for an adult audience.
Included in this is brand-new Star Originals programming available only through Disney Plus, such as Dopesick and Only Murders in the Building. Additionally, you may view the most recent seasons of a variety of shows, including Family Guy, Scrubs, How I Met Your Mother, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, as well as the fan favorites Lost, Scrubs, and How I Met Your Mother.
Disney Plus: Is it worth it?
Disney Plus is a reasonably priced, fully functional entry point to the Disney content archive. Its collection of classics extends back to the 1930s, but after a sluggish start, it is expected to grow thanks to a steady stream of new exclusives until 2022 and beyond.
Originally, I stated in this review that "you should not feel obligated to go into Disney Plus right immediately if you're not a great Star Wars fan longing for The Mandalorian, or a parent with needy kids seeking holiday entertainment." But my perspective has shifted. Disney Plus is now a service for everyone thanks to the Star channel's abundance of explicit content and the overall caliber of original programming.
Disney Plus still lacks a sufficient amount of fresh, original content, at least when compared to Netflix or Amazon Prime. But it's getting better. It's also not difficult to watch the legacy content again, even after seeing it ten times.
Disney Plus will provide you value for your money, but it might not yet offer enough to convince you to stop using some of your other services.
