Here's what to anticipate from Mazda's future mid-size crossovers, the two-row CX-70 and three-row CX-90, both of which are due out next year.
Mazda plans to introduce two new crossovers in the United States, the CX-70 and CX-90.
Both will be powered by the company's innovative longitudinal engine platform and inline six engine.
The CX-70 is slated to make its debut later this year, followed by the three-row CX-90 in 2023.
The future Mazda CX-70 and CX90 mid-size crossovers will be the first to use the company's new longitudinal-engine architecture and inline-six engine in the United States. The CX-9 is replaced by the three-row CX-90, while the CX-70 is a two-row variation. Mazda has already unveiled the CX-60, a global model that is narrower than the eventual wide-body U.S. variants, but its style is likely to foreshadow what we'll see on our shores, as shown above in our rendering of the CX-90.
Mazda has promised gasoline, diesel, and Skyactiv-X compression-ignition variations of its new inline-six, although diesel is unlikely to be available in the United States. Mazda has yet to qualify the Skyactiv-X technology in the United States, thus a gasoline 3.0-liter is expected. With a turbocharger and a 48-volt hybrid system, the engine is estimated to produce around 300 horsepower. A plug-in hybrid powertrain with a four-cylinder engine and a single AC motor is also being developed. It'll most likely be similar to the CX-60's plug-in hybrid system, which features a 17.8-kWh battery pack and delivers 323 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque.
Mazda's new platform and engine are an attempt to become more premium, similar to BMW rather than Honda or Toyota. The longitudinal engine layout should allow engineers to fine-tune the ride and handling, as well as establish the all-important dash-to-axle ratio that suggests luxury. Mazda is unlikely to provide rear-wheel-drive variants of these cars, thus all-wheel drive will likely be standard across the board.
The CX-70 will arrive before the end of 2022, with a beginning price of roughly $38,000, and the CX-90, which will debut in 2023 with a starting price of over $40,000.
