The previous Lexus NX wasn't well-received by the auto industry; in fact, it was widely derided for being a more expensive, inferior version of a Toyota RAV4. But this new generation one? It has received much praise for its practical interior, opulent accents, cutting-edge powertrains, and stunning exterior and interior design. When she first saw it, my partner also exclaimed, "Wow," but in a negative way. She remarked that the grille was embarrassingly large and appeared to have been "designed by men, for men."
Hmmm. So, we're not off to a good start with her. But she quickly warmed up to the NX, if not to its appearance. She found the price to be appealing, and you might find it to be so as well. The Lexus NX 350h Luxury, the entry-level hybrid model, has a list price of $65,600 plus applicable taxes, but that is for the front-wheel drive model. You probably don't need much in the way of a Lexus NX.
Well, unless you're a ski enthusiast or live in the wilderness, the AWD might be more appealing. It has the Enhancement Pack, which raises the list price to $73,400 plus on-road expenses. That is the version we have. The most popular hybrid version of the Toyota RAV4 is the Cruiser grade, which costs $48,750 plus on-roads when fitted with the nearly identical powertrain and AWD. As a result, it won't be competing with that vehicle.
The second-generation Lexus NX does more than enough to set itself apart, so comparisons between it and the RAV4 should really end there. In fact, Lexus set out to intentionally make this generation's model more "Lexus" and less "luxury Toyota."
This is evident in the vehicle's more aggressive styling, which includes the recognizable (though reportedly somewhat contentious) grille, the angular LED headlights, the 18-inch alloy wheels with the somewhat chunky 235/60-profile tires (unfortunately, they are runflat, so there is no spare in the boot), and the very attractive rear end with a horizontal light bar spanning the tailgate.
The exterior is very appealing, and the interior is equally fascinating.
There is gorgeous red leather interior trim, which, unlike tan or white, won't show scuffs from dirty kids as readily. The almost square media screen display is also quite daring for a family SUV. There is Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, sat nav, and digital radio, but I'll have more to say about the usability of the multimedia system in next month's update.
The active lane-keeping assistance system, which I now always turn off when I drive the car, and other aspects of the driving experience are also controlled by the screen. Although I recognize how useful this kind of technology can be, I think the Lexus version goes too far in the direction of intervention.
When my partner, myself, and our daughter took the Lexus on the first of many road trips in May, I most definitely discovered that. We left the dogs at their favorite kennel (there wasn't room in the Lexus, and we weren't planning to bring them on this particular trip anyway!) and set out on the road, first going to see family in Goulburn before continuing on to Albury to see friends. We started out at our home in the lower Blue Mountains.
The car was packed; in addition to the baby's rearward-facing seat, we had a pram, a lot of luggage in the boot, and our baby seat. It was a pretty tight fit. Much more compact than the Kia Sportage, my previous long-term SUV.
While in the border city, I went to the Subaru WRX launch event and gave Gemma the Lexus to use for transportation. Without a doubt, she had problems.
She would first have trouble using Apple CarPlay. She couldn't get it to work with her phone, which is the same as mine and uses the same cable, so I had noticed it was hit-or-miss a few times since getting it. It also meant that she had to rely on the sluggish built-in sat nav to get from where we were staying to our friends' place. According to her, the instructions would appear just half a second after you were on the road. Which could mean the difference between taking the appropriate street turn or not.
Certainly not deal-breakers. but not very good. She also complained about the lane-keeping technology and asked me how to disable it the next time she drove it.
She appreciated how "natural" it felt to drive and that it had good steering, nice handling, a comfortable ride, and was also quiet. She liked how the battery sometimes drove the car without the need for the gasoline engine, which made it somewhat quiet.
Seeing which component of the drivetrain is moving the car forward has been fun to watch on the live powertrain graphic. Even on the highway, you can anticipate seeing the tiny green EV light blinking frequently.
Although we spent the majority of the trip on the highway, we also had some urban errands to run, and we were both pleased with how simple the driving was.
The journey home went smoothly, and 694 kilometers later, I filled the tank for the first time since I had picked up the car. Its average fuel consumption was 6.5L/100km, which I considered to be quite good. 5.0L/100km is the official combined cycle figure.
After that, it was home for more errands, a run through the Blue Mountains with friends, a trip to the suburbs by the sea in Sydney, and finally the completion of our first complete month with the NX.
The fuel consumption for the second tank was less impressive, at 7.1L/100km, but I blame the higher degree of undulation on the terrain. After running yet more errands, including a few trips into the city and back, shopping trips, and trips to see friends up in the mountains once more, there was a third tank used during this first month of getting to know the Lexus NX. I successfully achieved a return of 5.4L/100km for tank number three. In the upcoming months, I'm eager to see if I can get even closer to that elusive official figure. Stay tuned to see how I do, and in the following update, I'll give you more details on the new-generation NX's interior, infotainment system, and connectivity.
