LaTeX (pronounced /ˈlɑːtɛx/ LAH-tekh or /ˈleɪtɛx/ LAY-tekh[1]) is a software for creating documents with a high-level typesetting system. Usually LaTeX is used to compile documents in scientific publications. Writing with LaTeX uses a set of 'TeX' commands. The results of this writing will not immediately look like in word processing software such as Microsoft Word which is WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Got), so the user must perform the compile command first. What is unique about LaTeX is WYSIWYM (What You See Is What You Mean), where the logical structure of the document is more concerned.
Using LaTeX does require adjustments in advance and is not 'instant', but the results of the work carried out will be more consistent and neat. In addition, users can focus more on working on the content of the document rather than worrying about document style and layout issues. LaTeX will adjust the layout of the user's document, thus saving processing time.
About Overleaf
Overleaf is an online LaTeX editor website that can be accessed at https://overleaf.com. Overleaf has a lot of great features – and if you're new to trying out LaTeX or just using LaTeX for personal use, Overleaf's free features are more than enough. In this section, we will introduce some of the features in Overleaf.
Register
Before you start compiling your first LaTeX document on Overleaf, you are required to register an account which can be done via email, Google Account, or ORCID. However, if your institution cooperates with Overleaf, you can log in through the facilities provided by your institution.
Guide
Overleaf provides many articles and user guides which can be accessed via Help -> Documentation which is located on the top left bar.
There is also a quick guide if you have used LaTeX before and want to see a summary of TeX commands
Templates
Already have an idea of your LaTeX project, but not sure where to start? You can also try building your document using the templates that are already available. There are various templates for specific uses according to user needs, ranging from academic journals, books, presentations, to résumés or CVs.
You can explore variations of this template via the New Project command on the project page, or via the bar when you're on another page.
Export
After completing your LaTeX project, you can export the LaTeX documents you created in Overleaf as PDF files. The export document command is next to the Recompile command as shown in the following image
Collaborate
The most interesting feature of using this online LaTeX editor is the real time collaboration feature it offers. When you open your LaTeX project, you can share the document via the share command.
You can also set permissions on the documents you share, whether as editor or reader. The share option can be done in two ways, namely through the sharing link and invited users.
In general, the features we discuss in this article are essential features in the LaTeX document creation process. Of course there are many other interesting features of Overleaf to discover once you start your first LaTeX project.
