After testing every Lexus NX trim, we think the NX 350 may be our favorite. Although its combustion-only powertrain is more focused and refined, it lacks the zero-emission capability of the plug-in NX 450h+ and the fuel efficiency of the hybrid NX 350h. Additionally, it has more power than the sluggish NX 250.
We adore the NX 350's 2.4-litre turbo-four engine, which generates a strong 275 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque, an important 40 horsepower and 59 lb-ft more than the model it replaces. AWD has been updated to provide sure-footed traction, and the NX 350 instead uses an 8-speed automatic transmission, not a CVT like its hybrid siblings, to deliver enough power for any type of driver, heavy-footed or not. This means that when you floor the gas pedal, it won't rev to the moon and make a broken record player noise. The shifts typically go unnoticed and take place in the background, which is ideal for a luxury SUV. Although there isn't much turbo lag, and the momentum builds gradually and predictably without ever being intrusive or surprising, there is comfort in this.
Call us dinosaurs if we can't get used to zero-emission transportation, but even though the NX 350 isn't as efficient as either of the NX hybrid or plug-in hybrid models, it still feels authentically reassuring and endearing to drive. The NX's serene driving manners and courageous acceleration potential only serve to enhance the overall impressive picture.
The SUV looks much more mature than it did before. The rear lights are particularly distinctive, connected by an LED light bar that seems to be the standard on every SUV these days, and the front nose has been sculpted into a less offensive shape. We also like the script 'LEXUS' on the trunk lid. However, the interior steals the show and represents a significant advancement over the outgoing model.
This time, there is less visual drama, and the cabin is more airy with bolder centerpieces. For those who have forgotten what that looked like, the cabin of the current-generation Lexus IS can serve as a reminder. In comparison to the NX's many competitors, such as the Infiniti QX50 and Audi Q5, we find this design to be cozier and less cluttered than the Acura RDX, which has more buttons and clutter overall.
The build quality is much better, and the leather is nicely stitched. The infotainment system, however, has seen the most improvement. The unorganized haptic trackpad has been replaced with a sizable touchscreen that has a friendlier and more fluid user interface. Everything is logically labeled and arranged so that entering commands is no longer a guessing game. For those who prefer a more recognizable interface, there is also support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
The volume and heating controls, two of the most frequently used features, were cleverly kept as real dials by Lexus, as opposed to the touch slider nonsense used by the Volkswagen Golf and BMW iX. Real button controls are integrated into the spokes of the steering wheel, ensuring a short learning curve and simple integration for Lexus newcomers.
The NX's cabin specifics are worthy of their own paragraph. The LC 500 Coupe introduced the new gear shifter design, which is a delight to use. Every time you shift it into drive, it feels substantial and gives you a sense of occasion. Additionally, the electric door handles, which open with the touch of a button, save space, and the arrangement of the steering wheel and door panels make us think of the opulent LS 500 Sedan. Even the drive mode dial has been strategically placed for easy access and protrudes out like it was meant to be pushed.
With its second iteration, the NX has undoubtedly advanced significantly. It has impressed us with its pristine interior, enhanced ergonomics, and sensible infotainment system. Our favorite of the bunch is the NX 350 thanks to its robust engine, which is not only silky smooth but also incredibly eager to rev when pushed. Although it may not be as efficient as hybrid models, it offers a more focused and distraction-free driving experience.
