Looking for a sports sedan? Three Mercedes models, the Mercedes-AMG E 53 ($89,000), CLS 53 ($99,900), and GT 53 ($123,900), may catch your attention. They all happen to share a platform, run on the same engines, and, to the untrained eye, appear to be made of the same material, the last two in particular with their fastback silhouettes and vertical-slat front grilles. That poses a small problem. Porsche can produce a wide range of model trims, but ultimately, the Panamera is still the same car. Potential Silver Star customers may be confused by the alphabet soup of letters and numbers in this situation. Not to mention that each of these -53 sport sedans clocks in at a different price despite sharing the same mild-hybrid powertrain. Therefore, why is the GT 53 by far the most expensive?
Definitely not the way you look. The GT 53 has wider shoulders and a softer, more bulbous appearance. The GT adopts a more soap-bar-like shape similar to the EQS electric vehicle and does away with the CLS' customary trunk in favor of a hatchback liftgate. As part of the $25,000 Manufaktur package, the GT offers additional paint options, including the Rubellite Red you see on our test vehicle. It can also have 21-inch wheels installed, whereas the CLS can only have 20-inch wheels. The Panamera-style retractable rear spoiler is also present, but we never found it to be particularly useful or aesthetically appealing, which somewhat detracted from the GT's sleek appearance. When all is said and done, it hardly appears to be $24,000 more expensive.
then the interior? The CLS is also quite comparable. In addition to softer quilted seats, a thick two-tone steering wheel, and a center console design that resembles the GT sports car, there is more liberal use of leather throughout the interior. In addition to an optional Premium Rear Seating Package ($3,700) with a fixed center console and touchscreen, as well as adjustable rear headrests and climate-controlled cupholders, the GT offers a wider range of leather options and themes.
We much prefer the front-mounted, proper gearshifter to the E and CLS's plastic, column-mounted stalk. Although a panoramic sunroof is an option, many of the same characteristics and compromises still exist, such as the tiny sunroof that only covers the front cabin. When we have to hunch our six-foot frame under the headliner, the rear seats in both the GT and CLS are so small that they aren't even deserving of the name "rear accommodations." In this case, the E 53 wins hands down. With a complicated touchscreen menu and a responsive trackpad but an interface that doesn't seem well suited for the EQ, the interior also appears to place more of an emphasis on the IQ than the EQ. Additionally, it is a disaster that the touch-sensitive row of menu buttons is placed directly below the cupholders because every time you reach for something stowed there, your wrist will always activate the panel, causing the screen to confirm your new button press. It's frustrating, to put it mildly.
Both perform equally well, at least according to their -53 specifications. Under the epidermis, there are a few minor variations. Although they share a common platform, the GT 53 has a stronger brake system, an electronic limited-slip rear differential, and an adaptive air suspension. That ought to result in a smoother ride, but we found that the GT 53 rides harder. Better road hugging and traction come at the cost of harder crashes and reduced overall compliance. Despite the fact that it has the word "GT" in its name, we don't believe it to be the most comfortable grand tourer on the market.
Although the GT 53 is regarded as a full AMG product, the one-man, one-engine adage does not hold true in this case. It has the same 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six engine and mild hybrid system as the CLS 53, which produces the same 429 horsepower and 384 lb-ft of torque and accelerates from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in 4.5 seconds. If it's any comfort, the GT 53 does come with a key fob that is embossed on the front and back with the AMG logos.
It goes without saying that the GT 53 feels more eager to turn and corner than the CLS 53, but both vehicles accelerate with the same thrust and kickback as expected. When the road starts to wind and swerve, it seems to manage its weight better and enjoy the commotion more than the CLS due to its lower center of gravity.
In the GT 53, the 9-speed gearbox is better finished. Low speed lugging or harsh vibrations between clutch transitions are absent. One of our main complaints about the CLS was this. Because of this, the experience is more cohesive and behaves more smoothly at all speeds rather than just when driven quickly. The GT 53 actually sounds the same, revving with a soft, high-pitched wail that begs you to downshift just to emit more sonically pleasing notes, even without the switchable active exhaust of the CLS.
The GT 53 and CLS 53 are essentially the same vehicle when it comes down to it and serve the same purpose. The GT has a few advantages, such as a more agile driving style and a willingness to change course, but even with its swankier interior design and clever rear spoiler, we don't think it's worth the extra $24,000.
