Russian troops are reorganizing and preparing defenses in the event of a larger Ukrainian breakthrough, the UK defense ministry said today.
Russian units have built a new trench system near the Crimean border, as well as near the Siversky-Donetsk River between Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts, the British Ministry of Defense said.
"Some of these locations are up to 60 km behind the current front lines, suggesting that Russian planners are making preparations in the event of a further major Ukrainian breakthrough," the UK Ministry of Defence said.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian human rights investigators have released video of an alleged torture chamber used by Russian troops in Kherson, where arrested locals were electrocuted.
Russian troops used electric shocks to secure confessions, the top official said.
"They asked the questions they wanted and got the answers they wanted," said a man who said he had been held in one of the rooms for 24 days.
The place was holding 25 people at a time who were not allowed to use the restroom, officials said.
Vatican ready to mediate in Ukraine war, Pope says
The Vatican is once again ready to do everything possible to mediate and end the war in Ukraine, Pope Francis said in an interview with Italian daily La Stampa.
He also called on everyone not to give up, when asked if he believed reconciliation between Moscow and Kyiv was possible.
“But everyone has to commit to heart demilitarization, starting with their own, and then pacifying, disarming violence. We should all be pacifists. Want peace, not just a truce that only serves to rearm. True peace, which is the fruit of dialogue,” the Pope told the newspaper.
Russia refitting troops, preparing defenses to stop more Ukrainian breakthroughs - Ministry of Defence
After the loss of Kherson, Russian forces are reorganizing and preparing for defense in case of a major Ukrainian breakthrough, the British defense ministry said today.
"Following the withdrawal of its forces from the west of the Dnipro River, Russian troops continue to prioritize refitting, reorganization and defense preparation in most sectors of Ukraine," the ministry said today.
He added that these Russian units have built new trench systems near the Crimean border, as well as near the Siversky-Donetsk River between Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts.
"Some of these locations are up to 60 km behind the current front lines, suggesting that Russian planners are making preparations in the event of a further major Ukrainian breakthrough," the UK Ministry of Defence said.
It is now likely that Russia will seek to redeploy some of the troops it took from Kherson to strengthen and expand its offensive operations near the town of Bakhmut in the Donetsk region, the update said.
Grim scenes show the Ukrainians retaking Kherson
Ukrainian troops are slowly reviving the city of Kherson after capturing it last week, as well as much of the surrounding area. In a major setback for Moscow, Russia pulled its troops back to the other side of the Dnipro.
