A declaration of emergency was issued on Monday evening after a police crew opened fire after being called to Wieambilla's home
Two police officers were killed and another injured after a shooting incident in Queensland.
Police were called to a rural property on Wains Road in Wieambilla, in the Western Downs area about 270km west of Brisbane, at around 4.45pm on Monday.
Two local officers were shot dead at the scene, said the local mayor, while another was injured. The fourth is believed to be unhurt.
Queensland Police did not confirm the details late on Monday but the mayor of the Western Downs regional council, Paul McVeigh, said the death was a tragedy.
"This is an absolute tragedy in our community," McVeigh told Guardian Australia. "Several young police officers being shot dead is an absolute tragedy."
McVeigh said he could not confirm further details.
An emergency declaration was issued late on Monday for the area of Wieambilla and Wains Road closed to the public.
Residents in Chinchilla Tara Road, Wieambilla Road, Bennetts School Road and Mary Street were told to stay indoors until further notice. Specialist police are on their way to the scene.
The Queensland Ambulance Service was at the scene and a spokesperson described the incident as ongoing.
An ambulance spokesman said four crew members responded to the "QPS incident" but were stationed outside the declared zone. At least three emergency services helicopters responded to the incident.
Queensland Police said: “Several police crews were present at the property. Residents within the declared areas must remain indoors until further notice and motorists and pedestrians are advised to avoid the areas. There is no further information at this time.”
A police spokesman could not comment on specific reports or provide further information when contacted by Guardian Australia.
