Grammarly Review [2023 Update]: Is Grammarly Worth It?

When you write on virtually any website on the internet, in emails, Word documents, social media posts, or on your own website, Grammarly will find grammar, spelling, punctuation, word choice, and style errors.

{getToc} $title={Table of Contents}

Benefits:

  • aids in identifying poor adjectives and better alternatives (Premium)
  • highlights the overuse of certain words
  • demonstrates excessively long and wordy sentences

Pros:

  • enhances your writing abilities
  • Correct grammar and readability advice
  • complies with your style of writing (academic, casual, creative, etc.)
  • Formal, neutral, and informal levels of formality that can be changed
  • can import text into their browser-based service or use it as a browser extension.
  • integrates with Google Docs, Outlook, and Microsoft Word
  • instantaneous grammar and spelling checks
  • App is available for both iOS and Android and is excellent for all types of writers, not just authors.
  • The premium version includes a plagiarism detector.
  • Simple to use and comprehend
  • Affordable

Cons:

  • Only documents up to 4 MB and 100,000 characters are permitted in the website editor.
  • Integration with Google Docs is still in beta.
  • The free version only looks for spelling and grammar mistakes—not style or context—
  • The website for Grammarly resizes awkwardly in split-screen mode and does not scroll.
  • You may feel pressured by its marketing to purchase the premium version.
  • It falls far short of fully replacing a human editor.

Bottom line: I always write with Grammarly. It improves my style, flow, and word choice while correcting every spelling and grammar error. Excellent premium features, including genre-specific suggestions and plagiarism detection, are available only in the paid version. However, the free version is superior to any other free proofreader on the market and sufficient for the majority of users.

Grammarly is a fantastic editing program. It has its limitations and isn't suitable for everyone, though it might change the lives of some authors. In order to help you decide whether Grammarly is the right choice for you, this review will address some of the most frequently asked questions.

I'll get right to the point and say that I love Grammarly. It makes you reflect on your writing, which can only help you become a better writer.

Speaking from experience, Grammarly has aided me in the following ways:

  • Find weak adjectives and discover stronger alternatives.
  • Stop using certain words excessively.
  • Reduce the length of long sentences
  • Be sure to spell everything correctly in important emails and blog posts.
  • Most people should just use Grammarly's free version. Better than you anticipate.

You're going to adore this little tool if, like me, you occasionally feel like Yoda with a grammar book.

What is Grammarly?

Grammarly, a spelling and grammar checker created in 2009, finds errors in grammar, punctuation, word choice, style, and much more as you write on websites, emails, Word documents, social media, and other types of writing.

Imagine it as a tiny robotic grammar angel that is constantly watching your back.

Being able to check your grammar and spelling without constantly uploading your text to an online editor is convenient (although you can still do that). The Grammarly browser extension only needs to be installed for it to function while you type on websites like Gmail, Facebook, Twitter, Google Docs, and others.

Additionally, Grammarly has direct integrations with Outlook and Word. It only functions with these apps outside of a browser.

Both a free and a paid version of Grammarly are available. (We'll examine how the two differ later in this review.) Let's just say that the free version has a lot of helpful features.

Is Grammarly reputable and secure? Grammarly is legitimate and safe, yes. Both their website and plugin are very secure. "Your words are your own; we will never sell or rent the information about you or your team. According to Grammarly's security page, we don't assist third parties in using you to advertise their products.

Grammarly: Is it reliable?

Yes, Grammarly's checks for grammatical and spelling errors are accurate. Compared to other similar proofreading apps, it is more accurate.

Grammarly Premium also provides accurate suggestions for improving writing style, passive voice, word choice, sentence structure, and comma placement, though it is not a substitute for a human editor.

Rather than hard-core authors, Grammarly targets people who write emails and social media posts with its high-quality accuracy. However, I'd also recommend Grammarly to authors who are willing to overlook a few grammar checks that don't apply to prose.

Is it simple to use Grammarly?

Yes, using Grammarly is simple. Even though Grammarly isn't always our top pick, many critics and reviewers (read: me) will concede that it's the most user-friendly proofreading service available.

Grammarly was made to be simple to use for all types of people because its creators anticipated that regular people would use it.

Who ought to utilize Grammarly?

Grammarly should be used by everyone. Anyone's writing will be improved by this proofreading tool, from best-selling authors to non-native English speakers.

It is acceptable for non-writers to use Grammarly's free version. Its grammar and spelling checker is much more comprehensive than Word's spell checker. In order to make your emails look as professional as possible, it works on both Outlook and Gmail.

If any of the following apply to you:

  • want to steer clear of embarrassing grammar, spelling, and typographical errors
  • Want to make your writing more lucid, interesting, and succinct?
  • want to hire ghostwriters or want to use a tool to check your writing for plagiarism on almost any website
  • if you want to share content in English but you speak a language other than English

How much does Grammarly cost, in detail?

There are no additional costs associated with Grammarly's free version. I've discovered that the free version is really quite robust and meets the needs of the majority of users.

Each month you use Grammarly Premium, the price is a maximum of $29.95. However, there are options for pricing that let you save money by buying larger quantities of Grammarly Premium.

  • $30.00 per month
  • $60.00 per 3 months ($20.00/month value)
  • $144.00 per year ($12.00/month value)
  • Grammarly Business is $12.50/month per member (minimum 3 members)imum 3 members)

Grammarly Free & Premium Differences

The primary distinction between Grammarly's free and premium versions is that the latter provides you with a significantly greater number of recommendations, vocabulary improvements, writing style suggestions, and plagiarism checks.

Does Grammarly Premium offer value? Yes, Grammarly's premium version is well worth the money, especially if you opt for the annual subscription, which saves you 61% annually.

For writers, bloggers, marketers, students, academics, anyone in corporate America, etc., Grammarly Premium is fantastic. I use the premium version because my website and books are reviewed by a lot of people, and my blogging frequently contains grammatical and spelling errors.

The Grammarly plagiarism checker is only available in the premium version. To make sure there hasn't been any plagiarism, the checker searches the Internet. This gives you comfort whenever you use ghostwriters or write for an academic audience.

Grammarly Premium provides suggestions for your writing style that are specific to the genre.

When a word is repeated or overused, the premium feature Vocabulary Enhancement will suggest context-optimized synonyms and alternatives to help you broaden your vocabulary and write more clearly.

Can Grammarly take the place of human editing?

Grammarly cannot take the place of editing and proofreading by humans.

This Grammarly review shows how much it can accomplish. But readers frequently ask me if Grammarly can take the place of hiring an editor or proofreader for their books.

Unfortunately, I must inform you that while Grammarly Premium and Free are useful editing tools to have in your toolbox, they should not take the place of a human proofreader.

It will overlook details that can only be found by a human editor, such as the context in which particular words or phrases are used. This proofreading tool may point out intentional "errors" for authors who use creative writing methods or dialogue-heavy scenes.

Grammarly's feedback is only so good. No matter how good the proofreading software is, there are just some things that only a human can do.

It can be a second set of eyes for someone like me who frequently writes for blogs, emails, comments, podcasts, and social media. However, don't imagine that it will assist you in saving money on book editing.

Engage a human editor prior to publishing your eBook on Amazon. Don't cut corners either. Whatever you pay for, you get.

Why I Enjoy Using Grammarly

Even the free version of Grammarly has many features that I love.

Grammar and spelling checker in real time. A real-time grammar checker is Grammarly. Just knowing that something needs to change when it has a red underline is convenient.

Would you use a grammar checker if you had to click a button each time you wanted to do so? No. Would you occasionally forget? Yes. Grammarly doesn't require any buttons to function (except the Google Docs beta version).

simple to use For regular people, Grammarly is effective. It is useful for authors and writers, but it is also intended to assist regular people in writing emails, social media posts, and other types of writing.

This strategy allowed Grammarly's designers to ensure that it was simple to use, and they were successful.

simple justifications Thank the creators of Grammarly for providing clear, understandable explanations for each of their suggestions.

You have the option of "See More In Grammarly" or "Quick View." This method provides you with succinct yet accurate justifications for the changes Grammarly is recommending.

high rate of accuracy I can't tell you how many times I've yelled at the grammar checker in Google Docs for failing to understand my perfectly comprehensible sentence. Thankfully, Grammarly has excellent accuracy.

Of course mistakes will be made by all proofreaders. However, Grammarly is a leader in providing precise AI spelling and grammar recommendations.

individual dictionaries Even the Grammarly free version includes a personal dictionary that you can edit while writing or on your account.

Grammarly's dictionary works similarly to Word's or Google Docs' and will never suggest you change a word once it has been added to the dictionary.

mobile and desktop capabilities. Grammarly offers convenient desktop and mobile keyboard options for its spelling and grammar checker.

Weekly progress report. Grammarly keeps track of your general weak points and highlights areas you can improve over time. You can find out if you need to stop prepositionally ending sentences and using squinting modifiers by checking your weekly report card. (I now understand what those are thanks to Grammarly.)

This weekly report card charts your development over time. In this manner, you can track your writing's development over the course of weeks, months, or even years.

What I Find Disappointing About Grammarly

Let me briefly discuss the Grammarly features I don't like in this article.

No integration with Scrivener. Outside of a web browser, Grammarly only integrates with Microsoft Outlook on Windows and Microsoft Word on Windows or Mac.

I enjoy writing my books in Scrivener, as do many other authors. Grammarly cannot integrate with well-known programs like Scrivener or even OpenOffice, in contrast to ProWritingAid.

In beta is Google Docs. For some reason, Google Docs, one of the most widely used word processors in the world, still only has the beta version of Grammarly, one of the most widely used proofreading tools in the world. (Is there an eye roll between these lines somewhere?)

Grammarly can open a sidebar with detailed suggestions in Google Docs or provide real-time suggestions. Both of these use cases have severe performance and bug issues with Google Docs.

aggressive promotion Hey, I get it, Grammarly needs to make money, so I understand if they are pushing you to upgrade to the premium version. Heck, I even use Grammarly Premium, so I don't have a problem with this. However, I am aware of others who have grown weary of receiving so many emails from you.

You can thankfully opt-out of or unsubscribe from these emails.

Only English is supported by Grammarly. You can, of course, switch between American, British, Canadian, and Australian English. However, you need a different proofreading tool if you want to edit in a different language.

These difficulties with Grammarly are not deal-breakers. When Grammarly informs authors that their imaginative prose is in error, they might become irate. Unfortunately, non-native speakers might accept incorrect comma suggestions. But in the end, Grammarly's benefits outweigh its drawbacks in a big way.

Does Grammarly Fit Your Style?

Even if you only write on Facebook, I believe Grammarly is appropriate for just about everyone who writes in English.

Nobody is flawless. Everyone makes errors, whether they are careless or unintentional. Grammarly helps you write better, avoids embarrassing grammatical errors, and teaches you little-known grammar rules.

In my opinion, Grammarly Premium is well worth the cost when paid annually. However, if you don't want to spend the money, the free version is miles ahead of Word's spell checker and is still worthwhile to download.
