Graphic design is a difficult art form that requires years to master and frequently artistic ability. If you have none of these talents, like the majority of people, you can still create beautiful graphics without a degree in graphic design. To achieve this, we utilize streamlined online graphic design platforms that offer an intuitive image editor and professionally designed templates for any purpose. Canva is the best tool of this type, and its prices are extremely reasonable. You can create any type of design in minutes for only $9.95 per month (or 30 days for free). In addition, you have unrestricted access to a library of 110 million stock images, a feature that ordinarily costs hundreds of dollars per month. Adobe Express is a viable alternative to Canva, although it is slightly inferior.

Canva pricing (Free vs. Pro. vs. Teams)
The Free plan is always free, but its features are extremely limited. Still, it's pretty good and allows you to do most basic editing, such as using a limited number of templates and editing text, colors, and a few photos. However, the vast majority of premium assets, such as premium templates, premium images, and other premium elements and functions, are unavailable.
The majority of customers utilize the Pro plan, which is adequate for individuals and small teams. With the Pro plan, you have unrestricted access to over 110 million stock photos, videos, graphics, and audio files, in addition to over 610,000 templates for any purpose. In addition to creating branding templates, you can also select brand colors, logos, and fonts. In addition, you gain access to background removal, resizing (which is surprisingly useful), the ability to create your own templates, social media scheduling, and one terabyte of cloud storage. All of these features are available for $12.99 per month with monthly billing and $9.99 per month with annual billing ($119.99 per year). The Pro plan also allows you to select the number of team members, with presets for 5, 10, 25, 50, and a custom option.
The Teams plan has recently replaced the Enterprise plan. It is significantly less expensive, as teams of up to five members can obtain it for $14.99 per month. Each additional member beyond the fifth (so, if your team has six members), costs $14.50 per month. The Teams plan includes all the features of the Pro plan, in addition to a number of features primarily designed to manage your teams. These include the ability to manage your team's Canva uploads, workflows that allow you to approve drafts prior to publishing, the ability to set specific permissions for each team member, unlimited storage, single sign-on, and 24/7 customer support.
Pros
Over the years of using Canva to design graphics, we've discovered a number of benefits that make it the best online tool for graphic design.
1. Templates
Canva's success is largely attributable to its professionally designed templates. Logos, flyers, banners, posters, resumes, invitations, business cards, video intros, memes, and many other types of graphics can be created using these templates. The greatest benefit is that they are designed by expert graphic designers. Therefore, it is as if you had a personal designer create all of your graphics, and you only need to change the colors and text.
There are a variety of templates available for both the Free and Pro plans, but we've found that the free templates are frequently too basic for the projects we're working on. With the Pro plan, you have access to all the necessary features.
2. Photo effects
You can access photo effects by selecting "Edit Image" from the top bar after clicking on a photo. This will open a side window containing various edits, filters, and effects.
It begins with adjustments to the image's luminance, contrast, and saturation. You'll also find filters that alter the color scheme, but we've discovered that these have a negative impact on image quality because JPG files are heavily processed. You can also create mockups using the "Smartmockups" filter, which transforms your image or element into a mockup automatically.
Additionally, there are special effects such as pixelation, mosaic, crop, prism, screen, and color. We found shadows to be the most useful feature, as they allow you to cast realistic shadows on any image. However, there are no advanced editing tools that allow you to create even more realistic shadows. In addition, the majority of users prefer to utilize the Blur tool and the renowned Background Remover, both of which perform admirably.
3. Unlimited downloads of stock photos, videos, and audio
Visual content will be more important than ever in 2023, and Canva capitalizes on this by providing you with unlimited access to its entire collection of over 110 million stock images.
You can view all stock images directly from the Canva editor by clicking "Elements" on the left sidebar and entering a search term, such as "office", in the search bar. You cannot directly download the image, but you can use it in your Canva design and then download that.
In general, the Canva stock images are quite good and satisfy the majority of our visual content requirements, but occasionally we cannot find the ideal image. We also maintain an on-demand pack from one of the stock photo websites for these instances.
4. Drag-and-drop editor
Canva's core is the drag-and-drop editor, which is used to create any type of graphic, from logos to video intros. Move, resize, add, remove, and alter the transparency of elements with a single mouse click.
As you can see in the following video, we searched for images of "students" and then simply dragged and dropped a suitable image in its place. Then, we modified the text by clicking on it and typing a new version using the keyboard.
5. Free fonts
Buying fonts is quite costly, as each style costs approximately $30 and multiple purchases quickly add up. To simplify the workflow, Canva includes a multitude of fonts, particularly popular fonts for graphic design.
If the font you desire is not available in Canva, you can upload your own. Don't forget, however, that using premium fonts requires a valid license; downloading and using them illegally in designs can result in legal trouble. Canva lacks some popular fonts for graphic design, such as Proxima Nova and Museo Sans, despite its extensive font library. For this reason, we also enjoy using Adobe Express, which provides access to more than 20,000 Adobe Fonts.
6. Publish to social media (or schedule)
Canva enables the sharing of graphics on all of the most popular social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, LinkedIn, and Twitter. You can also add descriptions, but you cannot include social media-specific features such as location, tagging others, and adding partnerships. You can share the post with the Content Planner if you do not intend to publish it immediately.
7. Content planner
The majority of customers only require a simple calendar that allows them to schedule a post and add a description, so standalone content planner programs are too expensive and complex. And this is precisely what the content planner in Canva does.
8. Brand Kits
Brand Kits are likely one of Canva's most effective yet underutilized tools. Individuals can also benefit from them, despite the fact that they are fantastic for teams and businesses.
The primary benefit is that you can apply your brand's appearance (colors, fonts, logo) with a single click, rather than manually searching for them each time. Pro accounts permit the creation of a single Brand Kit, while Enterprise accounts permit the creation of multiple Brand Kits.
9. Animations
Canva added animations to otherwise static images in response to the growing popularity of videos in recent years, especially on TikTok. Fade, Pan, Rise, and Simple are some of the most popular animations, which coincidentally resemble popular camera movements.
The animations have two distinct advantages: a) they can transform static images into GIFs or movies without the need to create a video, and b) a dynamic advertisement or social media post typically receives more attention.
10. Multiple export formats
Canva allows us to export graphics in all of the most popular formats for still and moving images, including JPG, PNG, PDF Stand., PDF print, SVG, MP4, and GIF. Except for SVG, all of them are available with the Free plan.
Cons
Throughout the years we've used Canva, we've encountered a few issues that disrupted our workflow, were annoying to deal with, or were missing features we'd love to have. Thankfully, Canva has received numerous updates over the years, which have eliminated a number of bugs, but a few disadvantages remain.
1. Customer support could be better
We repeatedly evaluated the customer service and were never completely satisfied. Typically, it takes between one and three business days to receive a reply; if you contact them on Friday, you may have to wait until Tuesday or even longer. In addition, the responses frequently did not answer our question, indicating that the assistant did not even read the request, which added another 24 to 96 hours to the wait time.
2. Incorrect SVG display field
When a project is exported as an SVG, the viewbox property is typically approximately 20% smaller than intended. Since SVGs are infinitely scalable, this is not a problem for the vast majority of people. Incorrect viewbox size can cause sizing issues, which can be problematic for web designers. We also notified Canva's technical team of the issue, which responded that it had been resolved. However, the problem persists months later.
3. Lacking gradients
The only way gradients can be used in Canva is with vector gradients from the asset library. This is not very useful, however, if the gradient colors do not suit your needs (you cannot change them) or if you need to apply a gradient to a complex object.
Currently, gradients can only be used as an overlay. We hope that Canva will soon support gradients for elements and text.
Image editing (but not really)
We do not believe that this is a con of Canva's image editor, but we noticed that the majority of other reviews mention it, so we decided to explain why it is not. Canva is not a post-processing application such as Lightroom or Luminar. This means that it cannot handle raw image files or perform advanced edits, but it was never intended to. Since Canva is a platform for graphic design, you are expected to use already edited photos and make only minor adjustments, which Canva can do. Adding compatibility with raw file formats and advanced editing tools would unnecessarily complicate the interface, potentially slow down Canva, and alter its overall purpose.
