Volvo Plug-In Hybrids to Increase Range and Horsepower by 2022

The new Extended Range models of the S60, V60, S90, XC60, and XC90 Recharge all offer a longer range and 455 horsepower.

  • Volvo is updating its 60- and 90-series plug-in hybrid powertrains.
  • A more powerful electric motor and a larger battery pack result in increased horsepower and range.
  • This is true for the models S60, V60, S90, XC60, and XC90 Recharge.

Volvo has released details about the upgraded plug-in hybrid powertrain in the United States. We've updated the story to include EPA range estimates and a few additional details.

Volvo recently revealed details about an updated version of its plug-in hybrid powertrain, and it appears as though these upgrades will soon be available on Volvo models sold in the United States. The S60, V60, S90, XC60, and XC90 PHEV models will benefit from a more powerful electric motor and a larger battery pack, which Volvo refers to as Recharge. Total horsepower and torque will increase to 455 hp and 523 pound-feet, respectively. The EPA estimates that the hybrids' electric driving range will increase significantly as well, between 16 and 19 miles depending on the model.

Previously, the combination of a turbocharged and supercharged turbo 2.0-liter engine and an electric motor produced 400 horsepower in these hybrids (or 415 hp in the V60 Polestar Engineered), and the additional grunt comes from a more powerful electric motor. The battery capacity increases from 11.6 kWh to 18.8 kWh (Volvo has not disclosed the new battery's usable capacity), and the EPA-estimated electric-only range increases to 41 miles for the S60 and V60, 38 miles for the S90, and 35 miles for the XC60 and XC90.

Additionally, the Recharge hybrid models receive updated programming for the regenerative braking system, which enables one-pedal driving, as well as updates to the gasoline engine that are said to provide increased low-end power. Volvo will use the "Extended Range" moniker to differentiate models equipped with the updated powertrain, though we anticipate that these models will eventually supplant the outgoing hybrids when they begin to arrive in US dealerships.
