The motorcyclist died and the driver was injured after an attempt to stop traffic by police in Swansea 44

A 19-year-old motorcyclist died after colliding with another vehicle along the busy Swansea Road last night after police attempted to stop traffic. The accident occurred along St Helens Road shortly after 8pm.

South Wales Police voluntarily referred the matter to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) in accordance with national protocol. The motorcycle driver tragically died at the scene, while the driver of the second vehicle was taken to hospital for treatment.

An IOPC spokesperson said: "We can confirm that we have opened an independent investigation into the fatal collision that occurred last night shortly after 8pm on St Helens Road, Swansea. The collision involved a motorcycle and other vehicles driven by members of the public. Following an attempt by the South Wales Police to stop away, the motorcyclist died at the scene, and the driver of the second vehicle was taken to hospital for treatment.

“The troops reported last night's incident to us and we have sent investigators to the scene and post-crash procedures. Our thoughts are with the grieving family at this difficult time and we have reached out to them to offer our condolences and explain our role. We will also contact the drivers of other vehicles involved. Our investigation is at a very early stage.”

A South Wales Police spokesperson added: "South Wales Police can confirm the death of a 19 year old male following a fatal collision which occurred last night on St Helens Road, Swansea. This matter has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct. We are cooperating with their independent investigation into this matter."
