The Ford Mustang Mach-E, the winner of our EV of the Year award, will receive a few updates for the 2022 model year. Along with pricing adjustments for some models and color palette tweaks, the most notable change is an increase in usable battery capacity, which should result in a longer battery life and improved range. The standard battery pack's usable capacity increases from 68.0 to 70.0 kWh, while the optional extended range battery pack's capacity increases from 88.0 to 91.0 kWh.
In addition, Ford claims that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will not retest the 2022 Mach-E, which means that official range figures will remain the same as they are now, which are between 211 miles for the standard range AWD model and 305 miles for the RWD California Route 1 model. However, based on the capacity increase, we would expect the updated 2022 model, which would be equivalent to the 2021 AWD extended range car we tested, to go an additional 8 miles in our real-world highway test at 75 mph, as compared to the 2021 model. In that test, the 2021 model achieved a range of 250 miles, compared to an EPA-rated range of 270 miles for the current model. We are looking forward to putting a 2022 model through the same rigors and seeing how it does.
Inquiring about the possibility of these battery upgrades being pushed to existing 2021 Mach-E models via over-the-air updates, we will update this story as soon as we receive further information. Ford declined to comment.
The California Route 1 trim level, which was previously only available with rear-wheel drive, now offers an all-wheel drive option as well as a number of other enhancements. In addition, heated front seats and a heated steering wheel are now standard on this trim, and a black-painted roof is now standard on the performance-oriented GT (it was previously an extra $385).
While the base price of the Select model remains unchanged at $43,995, the Mach-E Premium model's price increases by $500 to $49,200, and the California Route 1 model's price increases by $375 to $51,875, respectively. The GT model, which is more powerful, has had its price reduced by $1005, and now starts at $59,995. All-wheel drive is standard on this model, whereas it is an additional $2700 option on all other models.
The color palette has been slightly altered, with Iced Blue Silver Metallic replacing Iconic Silver Metallic and Carbonized Grey no longer being offered as an option. Grabber Blue and Cyber Orange, which were previously only available on the GT, are now more widely available across the entire lineup of vehicles. A new Ice White Edition is also available, which we previously covered in detail.
Orders for the 2022 Mustang Mach-E are currently being accepted on the Ford website, but expect a lengthy wait time. It is expected that deliveries of the Select and California Route 1 models will begin in February 2022, with deliveries of the Premium and GT models beginning in April 2022, according to the company's estimates.
