Jaguar has taken the opposite approach with their flagship sports car, the F-Type, at a time when automakers have begun downsizing engines and focusing on electrification. They eliminated their smallest four- and six-cylinder engines in 2022, leaving only the V8 as an option. We are not complaining. Jaguar's 5.0-liter supercharged V8 engine is packed with personality, sonic appeal, and instantaneous power delivery.
The V8 is available in two distinct coupe and convertible configurations. The base P450 engine produces 444 hp and 428 lb-ft of torque with both RWD and AWD, while the test vehicle's AWD-only R engine produces 575 hp and 516 lb-ft. 0-100 km/h is accomplished in a jaw-dropping 3.7 seconds, which is nearly a second faster than the P450 and three-tenths faster than the Cayman GTS 4.0. However, compared to the Porsche, it is not as stable at high speeds, as athletic in low-speed corners, nor does the steering give your fingers a sense of life.
Then, what does it excel at, and why should you consider an F-Type R over its extensive list of competitors? Jaguar has always excelled in the areas of personality, charisma, and driver involvement. It begins with the exterior design. While 911s have grown in size to accommodate their wider tracks and larger engines, the F-Type has maintained its svelte proportions, and it shows. Find me a more captivating front end, especially one draped in this $6,100 shade of Sorrento Yellow, than this aging platform. All models come standard with 20-inch wheels and menacing quad exhausts arranged in the same manner as an Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio.
Jaguar has attempted to make it stand out with features such as pop-out door handles, a front hood that swings up backwards, a lift gate similar to the AMG GT's hatchback design, hidden cabin fan vents, and airplane-style switchgear and shifters. However, while the exterior of the F-Type has been updated over the years to reflect modern design, the interior has not. It's the F-weakest Type's point, and although we deemed it stylish and chic in 2014, it has become dated, with plasticky switchgear and a general fit and finish that hasn't kept up with the competition, especially when Hondas and Toyotas are clearly stepping up their game.
The steering wheel is a good size and has an ergonomic design, but the paddle shifters feel cheap and are not nearly as satisfying to use as those on current JLR products such as the Defender V8. Cabin space is also limited. Compared to 2+2 competitors such as the Lexus LC 500, the Lexus LC 500 is not as cramped as a Mercedes-AMG GT, but it lacks storage options and cubbies. The 12-way adjustable seats are attractive and appear thin, but they provide ample lumbar and lateral support. Surprisingly, there is ample room for my six-foot frame to find a comfortable driving position. The coupe's integrated trunk space is actually quite respectable - more than the AMG GT and McLaren GT - but the convertible is a complete non-starter.
The F-drivetrain Type's is its greatest strength. Again, it does not handle with the precision of a 718, nor does it exude the confidence and stability of an all-wheel drive BMW M4, but it does make you smile every time you take it out for a spin. We owe the majority of this to the supercharger, which provides a substantial surge of power that swells when the accelerator pedal is pressed, making it effortless to reach unholy speeds without realizing it. This V8 begs you to explore the entire powerband, rewarding you with noise and power while stimulating your brain to release waves of dopamine to all the pleasure centers. Even in the Dynamic Mode setting, we observed that the traction and stability controls intervened more frequently than on pre-2019 models. This ensures that the rear end is always under control, so you must add more power than usual to induce oversteer, or simply disable the systems.
The following ensemble is unmistakably Jaguar. No other V8 on the market can match the ferocity of its revving. BMWs have a more sonorous, melodic, and pleasant sound compared to AMGs' low, burbly, and soulful tones. Instead, the exhaust noise of this Jaguar is reduced to its most elemental form. Sadly, they've tuned out all those pops and bangs on throttle overrun, so those desiring an excessive artillery barrage of exhaust noises should look for an F-Type R manufactured prior to 2019 models. And unlike before, it is evident when the exhaust valves are open, which occurs when the gas pedal is pressed past 50 percent or when the engine speed exceeds 3,500 rpm. Below that, they remain closed for a slightly muffled V8 roar, comparable to stuffing a tennis ball into a rottweiler's mouth. I'm confident that pulling a few wires under the hood or installing modding software can alter this.
What constitutes a driver's car, whether it be top speed, horsepower credentials, exhaust sound, or Nurburgring laptimes, is a matter of opinion. And in the eyes of many, the Jaguar F-Type R was never a performance competitor to the Porsche 911. Jaguar realized this and played a different hand, focusing instead on the emotional appeal of a sports car. This is why they eliminated the dull engines, if you can even call them that, prioritized the more powerful V8, and increased the glitz, glamour, and acoustic excitement. In this light, the F-Type has always been a shining example of excellence and a complete success.
